We thought members and friends of the Circuit would be pleased to know that Bretton has been awarded the title of Flintshire's Best Community Village 2017 — in the category for fewer than 1,000 residents. This is an annual competition organised by the County and sponsored by several local businesses. Bretton has been entered for the last six years and we are proud to have won several prizes, but until now we have not been awarded a First!
In 2015 we invited the judges in to see Bretton Church, at the time we were renovating the Church Hall. We explained that we were pursuing the project not only to make much needed
improvements but also to provide more attractive space for community use. Despite the plaster dust they were impressed with our intentions and awarded the village 3rd prize. In 2016 we invited them in again to view the Church Hall a year on. We also put on a display of Craft Group work. They were so pleased with what they saw we were awarded second prize.
In June 2017 judges noted our litter picking campaigns, viewed our gardens, well cared for public spaces, wild flower meadow area and our marvellous bug and bee hotels! Once again they were invited in to the Church for tea, cake and stories about recent events. They watched a visual presentation about Bretton's social activities such as the December Carols on the Green Evening that raised £210 for the 'Chester Aid to the Homeless' and the Lydian Singers Concert. They were also delighted to see and hear about the work of the Crafts Group and the many and various projects undertaken during the last twelve months including the knitted chickens donated to the Countess of Chester Hospital for the 'BabyGrow Appeal'; our link with a Church in Shropshire on 'Help for Syria', a project that has seen Bretton Church members and friends producing more than a hundred items of clothing and blankets. They were fascinated to hear about the knitted octopus project for the Special Care Baby Units in the area and congratulated us on our work.
People can live in a small village and never see or speak to anyone but the Church, together with the people of Bretton, are working hard to prevent that happening!
